Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel helps to bring out the healthy color of the skin. This is a non-oily gel which is light weight and it brings a golden tan for the body and the face without any exposure to the sun. It can be absorbed instantly and I need not wait much because the tan happens in two hours. Those of us who wish to maintain a tanned look all through the year can best use this product Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel.

The price is affordable and the ingredients are Erythrulose and DHA which brings in an appearance that looks naturally tanned. When I looked up this product on the internet, I saw it had many good reviews. There are others tanners too that I had tried earlier on. This one, Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel did not hobble and it looked so very natural on my skin. This does not have a very strong smell to it but it looks very natural.

I was a bit pessimistic about this self tanning gel at first because I thought this would be the same, streaky, splotchy and orange thingy just like the other self tanning gels. But it was totally different and it looked so beautiful dependable when it worked. I would recommend it to any of my friends and I have already done so. I bought it but there are no regrets.

I have fair skin and I had a double mind whether it would really work on me but surprisingly it did. It was very tan in the first few days but it later turned a bit orangish and then it faded away. But when I want a tan for a special dress I had on mind that I would wear it worked fine. I have a lot of freckles and the tan helped to hide them properly and they were not so prominent and glaring anymore but just a limited darker.

If you are looking to have that natural glow to your legs this can be the one. The cream is smooth and there are no streaks. There is a golden hue to the skin that you would surely like. You can re apply the cream if you want a darker tan. This sunless tanner Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel is the best among the ones I have tried. I understanding to purchase it once more. The smell could have been a little lighter although it gets milder after some time and after you have had a wash.

Sun screen and sun block wear off, you must re apply

Apply lotion 1/2 hour before going out

The SPF applies to holding power, thickness of lotion

You go on vacation and bake in the sun. It’s a must to have a gorgeous tan when you return home. Decades ago we would consume a reflector and slather ourselves with baby oil and iodine. We tanned on roof tops and called it tar beach. Now, everyone is older and wiser, hopefully. The sun may make you look genuine but it really isn’t worthy for your skin. Melanoma, skin cancer, is on the rise. You needn’t hibernate, you can still go out and enjoy the beach, boating, skiing, golf or your vacation but you have to be sun smart.

The sun reflects off sand, sidewalks, water and even in the shade you get UV exposure. If you are driving in a car and the windows aren’t tinted, you are exposed to the suns rays. Your windshield blocks out UVB rays but not UVA rays. Sand reflects 15 percent of UV rays. Any good dermatologist will recommend a worthy sun block or sunscreen protection. Minimally your sun protection should be SPF 30. It should be a UVA and UVB protectant.

Sun block and sun conceal come in anywhere from 8 SPF to 80 SPF. Some doctors say anything over 30 SPF isn’t necessary and the difference in protection is negligable The number indicates staying power .The higher the number the heavier the lotion’s texture so it doesn’t wear off as easily. SPF 70 does not give you twice the protection of SPF 35.. You must put at least a tablespoon of lotion on, putting on too little can gash an SPF 50 to an SPF 2. Most people only apply about 20% of the amount of sun screen needed to prevent wound. You should be using two Tablespoons. every two hours head to toe. Also look for these ingredients in your sun screen: Avobenzone, Meradiante, Ecamsule and Oxybenzone.

UVA rays are the rays that cause Melanoma and wrinkling. You can get screening that will actually expose the affect of all the years you’ve spent in the sun and how much pain any sunburn you’ve experienced has caused. I live in a Southern situation, we have eight to nine months of very strong sun exposure. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin’s connective tissue and can cause permanent afflict to skin and eyes, even cataracts in the long run. Good sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection are a must. Don’t buy cheap sunglasses.

UVB rays are found in tanning beds as well as outdoors. They affect the outer layer of your skin. They stimulate the skin to tan to protect itself naturally. UVB also can cause cancer and aging.

Tanning salons are tranquil available but states are cracking down about the age you have to be to expend one. They are particularly bad for you.Tanning beds and tanning lamps increase the chance of cancer. The UVA rays are 75 per cent stronger than the actual sun.The healthier way to get a honorable rank tan is the spray tan now available in shops and over the counter.

Clothing is available from L.L. Bean that has sun protectants in it. Solarweave and Rashguard are other companies that make sun protective clothing. A hat is a must. Applying sun screens and sun block 1/2 hour before going out in the sun should be a habit. Be sure to cover your ears, bridge of your nose, backs of knees, tops of your feet, hands, the aid of your neck and along your hair line. Don’t forget your lips. Most companies manufacture special lip coverage products. Skin cancer of the lip can move rapid to the lungs. Be sure to reapply often when out. Some sun screens and sun blocks are waterproof and resist sweating. Water resistant sun products need to be re applied as well. Waterproof lotions last twice as long as water resistant lotions. There are also special sun screens you can apply to your scalp. There are hundreds of different formulas sold over the counter and by prescription to protect you from the sun. You can even catch stickers to wear that will show you whether or not you’ve had too much sun exposure.

Preserve in mind sun screen and sun block break down after 2 years. I would recommend ditching your lotions after one year since you have no understanding how long they sat in warehouses or stores. There is no law requiring an expiration date on these products so mark yours with a magic marker so you know how extinct it is.

Babies need special attention. They should wear a strong protectant made specifically for babies. Most lines carry some product geared for children and babies. Babies should have a hat on and loose, clothing. Keep them in the shade and remember that sun reflects off surfaces.

See a Dermatologist at least once a year for a thorough skin examination and keep alert in between by checking yourself for changes in any moles. Look for irregular borders, asymmetry and diameters larger than 6mm.. You can use a mirror for hard to see areas. Cancer due to sun exposure can occur 20 years after exposure.

So, use good sun screen, avoid the mid day sun and wear protective clothing. You know the saying “Excited dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun.”, Cover up. Wear a hat. Re apply protection. Be sun smart.

As you spend your summer months lying by the pool, hiking on mountain trails or playing Frisbee at the park, you may find your skin covered with tan lines. Rather than dealing with the shocking skin color changes, you can fix your uneven tan. All you need is self tanner and a subtle tanning lotion.

Self Tanner Versus Subtle Tanning Lotion

Self tanners are the traditional method for getting a fake tan at home. The lotions cause a dramatic darkening of skin color in unprejudiced one day. With regular use, self tanner can make your skin gape several shades darker in just one week. Try a self tanner such as L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion.

Subtle tanning lotions, on the other hand, act as more of an everyday moisturizer with an added touch of self tanner. Its skin-darkening effects are subtle and aren’t noticeable until you use it for several days in a row. This is a good product if time isn’t an issue or if you’re only looking for a subtle change in your skin color. Try subtle tanning lotions such as Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer for face or body.

Reducing Tan Lines

Apply a coat of self tanner right after you shower and after you have dried yourself off. Apply the lotion only to the areas that need darkening. For instance, if you have tan lines from wearing a t-shirt in the sun, also known as a “farmer’s tan”, apply the self tanner to the lighter portions of your upper arms. Avoid adding the self tanner to any part of your skin that has a sufficient tan. You may need to ask for assistance to reach areas of your relieve that need darkening. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly to remove any leftover self tanner.

Let the self tanner soak into your skin throughout the day. The next time you take a shower, reevaluate your tan lines. If they’re still uneven, keep doing this technique until you’re happy with the results.

Evening a Tan and Increasing Overall Darkness

If you want to secure darker overall but have any uneven tan, you can use a combination of both the self tanner and the subtle tanning lotion. First, cover the lighter portions of your tan with self tanner just as described in the previous section. Try not to overlap the edges of your tan lines with self tanner as this may darken areas of your already dark skin that you want to avoid.

Next, apply the subtle tanning lotion on the areas of your body that are already dark but that you want to get darker. This could be your face, chest, legs and arms. Since these lotions are subtle, your skin will grow darker much slower than the other parts of your body.

Exercise this method for several days until your tan has evened out and you are darker overall. If your tan is even but you still want to get darker, switch to using either the self tanner or subtle tanning lotion on your entire body, rather than both on different spots. You’ll end up with an even tan that will look great in any outfit.

There is plenty of research that shows that tanning can cause skin cancer, yet many people still pursue the dream of a rich, golden tan. Luckily, for those looking to achieve the bronzed glow, there are many products on the market that can help to achieve the sun kissed look.

Applying lotions and sprays can be some what difficult and intimidating but with a shrimp practice and by following the 5 self tanning tips highlighted here, you may well be on your way to the deep, dark tan you have always dreamed of with out the harmful effects of the sun. The self tan tips may help to prolong your self tan and also give the self tan a better glow.

A self tanner will typically last about a week depending on the type of self tanner being musty and also the success of the prep time before the self tanner is applied. Self tanner sits on the top of the skin but skin is continually shedding so there is only a sure amount of time the self tanner will stay attached to the skin before it comes off.

Self Tanning Tip: Exfoliate

One of the most important tips for a successful self tanning experience is taking time in the prep period which involves exfoliating. Since dead skin cells shed off, you want to make clear you remove as many dead skin cells as possible before you apply the self tanner. Most drug stores and grocery stores sell some type of exfoliating wash or lotion, take a look at the labels and the product should station something about being an exfoliating product.

Self Tanning Tip: Dress Properly

A dark swim suit is the best item of clothing to wear while applying a self tanner, the item of clothing should be tight yet stretchable so that it does not get in the way as you are applying the self tanner but comfortable enough that you can still depart around. If you feel comfortable, you could go in your birthday suit when applying the self tanner.

Self Tanning Tip: Start with Lotion

I personally like spray on tanning products better than self tanning lotions but I would recommend when first starting out with self tanning products to begin with a self tanning lotion. Self tanning lotions are a bit easier to control and navigate, once you get experience applying a self tanning product, then I would recommend trying a spray on tanner to see which method of application you prefer.

Self Tanning Tip: Wash the Palms

One of the downfalls of applying a self tanning product is the fact that the hands can actually turn orange because so much self tanner soaks into the palms during the application process. There are a couple tips that can be offered to help prevent orange colored palms: the first self tanning tip is to wash the hands with soap and water or some type of baby wipes every couple minutes during the application process. The other self tanning tip is to wear gloves such as medical personnel wear during the application process. If you do choose to wear gloves, perform sure to not forget to self tan the hands, in which case you will need to wash your palms at the end of the application process.

Self Tanning Tip: Tricky Areas of the Body

Some of the most difficult parts of the body to secure a nice toddle free glow are the feet, toes, ankles and the hands, fingers, wrists. Exfoliating should be done especially well in these areas of the body, a little less self tanner seems to work better on the tricky spots as compared to too much self tanner. I have also found that small circle motions really help to rub the self tanner in well in these tricky parts of the body.

Following these 5 self tanning tips should really help with making the self tanning experience more successful and may even help to extend to golden glow a itsy-bitsy bit longer.

As a “fake bake” addict, I relied on my healthy golden glow to define me, to make me feel young and beautiful, and as my personal “alone time” each and every day. When I was diagnosed with Lupus and strictly forbidden from anymore trips to the tanning salon, my world seemed to melt around me. Shallow, I know… But at 19 years obsolete, I had finally outgrown my “ugly duckling” phase and had actually felt beautiful with this new golden glow. Desperate to maintain my rich, golden tone; I site out in search of the perfect alternative. I have tried everything from bargain brand self tanners to the top of the line products, and as ashamed as I am for being fooled, have even tried the tanning pills. After years of weekly product experimentations, the salon began offering the Mystic spray tan. Finally I had thought. Less effort, more realistic, and a lower chance for mistakes. Boy was I detestable. I was less than thrilled with the next generation of miracle tans and continued to slather those smelly, messy creams and lotions onto my body every couple of days.

On one particularly moody day as I moaned and groaned, fed up with the dramas involved in self tanning lotions, I could hear a voice echoing from the television set. It almost seemed to be talking directly to me…”Are you tired of messy lotions that stain your hands, and leave you streaky or orange? Are you tired of spending a fortune in costly salon appointments? Of standing in a cloud of spray? Or damaging your skin with unhealthy UV rays? I stood there entranced, nodding my head hypnotized as I peered around the corner to explore a pale woman with what resembled a blow dryer. As she hovered the tool over her body I watched her skin miraculously go from creamy pale to a beautiful and realistic golden brown in an instant and with such ease. Before I had even finished applying my messy self tanning cream, I literally ran for the computer to look into this new Jet Tan airbrush tanning product. I was amazed and decided that I absolutely must try it, but didn’t want to spend $60.00 on a product that had a good chance of not being what I was expecting. After searching for product reviews from real people, not paid actors and bargain shopping, I found HSN( Home Shopping Network) and ebay to have the best bargains. After a few days I had finally decided to take the descend and purchased the complete Jet Tan system on ebay for $30.00 which included shipping and insurance. When my Jet Tan system arrived, I immediately stopped what I had been doing to shower, exfoliate, and tan. I felt a little like a car that was in the body shop getting a modern paint job(Uh Oh, Better Rep Maco!), but I was amazed by how realistic looking the tan was. The color was not only beautiful, but the even tone and ease of use was new to me. It took very little time or effort and for the first time in years I was able to tan my hands and feet in a way that still appeared natural. Anyone that uses self tanners know that to make the tops of your hands and feet tan and natural looking is difficult, if not impossible with creams and lotions, but with Jet Tan I didn’t have to hide my feet in sneakers and could actually wear sandals without embaressment. I was hooked… At least for the moment I was.

The best way to build up to a dark, yet natural looking tan is to apply the product every other day until you have reached your personal “perfect color” so after my first application and complete satisfaction, I cleaned out my airbrush tool as the directions said to and decided to go for application number two after skipping a day. As I loaded up my Jet tan tool with the airbrush solution and pulled the trigger I heard a sputter and a spit and felt a cool air float across my skin, but no color. I pressed my finger against the opening to fabricate up pressure in the line and tried again. This time I watched again as I magically transformed my calf into that of a dark, golden beach dweller. Phew, I thought… Fair a momentary dread. I continued up my leg, quiet hypnotized and in love with my newfound product when it began to sputter and spit again. This time a simple trick didn’t work and I began to explore bubbles forming in the solution. It was unbiased like our kids when they decide to blow bubbles into their milk rather than drink from the straw. Here I stood now, in awe and upset with only a quarter of my body a deep bronze. I tried everything to get it going again, followed all of the directions, and watched the instructional dvd once again, but got nowhere. Finally fed up I decided to take the tool apart and fix it myself. Upon opening the gadget I could see no reason for the clog or reversal of spray, but can say that the airbrush gun is the cheapest, simplest thing I have ever seen. Although that fact is evident upon first glance, it becomes more obvious after looking into the “motor” of the machine. I truly felt my child could have built it. I did somehow, by pure magic get the tool working again. How? I really don’t know, but hey it was working again so I was content to have an all over bronze once again.

My review and best advice though is this.. The Jet Tan solution is the best, most realistic looking color I have found yet, and applying by means of airbrushing is the most incredible and real final ogle I have ever seen, but skip out on the Jet Tan tanning tool unless you are able to find it at an incredibly low price. I do still use the Jet Tan solution, but have given up on the tool itself. I have instead found portable and professional airbrush tools being sold for as low as $50.00 and am getting ready to order one. Although this may seem silly to some, to the rest of us who are determined to have a beautiful tan and have spent a fortune trying to find the perfect one, it’s a relief to finally stop searching.

The best prices I have found for this product as of January 18, 2006 are ….

HSN.com — Although the Home Shopping Network does not offer the airbrush tool, they do offer the solution, barrier cream(to keep your palms from becoming discolored), exfoliating cream, and facial bronzer at great prices.
A Jet Tan Refill Kit or Tanning Trio is only $16.95

8 oz. Jet Tan Instant Airbrush Tanning Solution – this self-tanner gives you color in two ways. First, with an instant bronzer that dries in 5-10 minutes and is visible the moment you apply the product. Next, with a self-tanning ingredient that reacts with the amino acids in your skin to develop a gorgeous natural tan in about 3-4 hours

2 oz. Jet Tan Instant Tanner and Bronzer For The Face – designed specifically to instantly give the face a golden bronze look in seconds and a self-tan that develops in about 3-4 hours. The beauty of this self-tanner is that it allows you to see where and how it is applied, which prevents streaking and gives instant color

1 oz. Barrier Cream – the answer to extra browning in areas that tend to attract too noteworthy color during the airbrush tanning process, such as the cuticles, nails, knees, elbows, palms of hands and soles of feet. Simply apply a thin layer of the Barrier Cream to these areas prior to airbrush tanning

And on ebay Jet Tan products can be found at the lowest possible prices I have seen yet, but as would be expected with an auction site, it can be a hit or miss as too whether Jet Tan can even be found on ebay at any given time. If you are enthusiastic in trying Jet Tan Airbrush products, but don’t want to exercise tons of money trying it out, preserve your eyes peeled for the occasional on ebay. Upon my last search just moments ago, there was a complete Jet Tan system listed on ebay for the current bid of $15.00. I would definitely treasure any and/ or all feedback, hints, tips and tricks readers have pertaining to self tanning or Jet Tan. Good Luck and Happy Tanning.

Such a variety of places to camp and types of camping exist that only general rules for camping safety can be outlined. For some people, camping is staying anyplace less than the Ritz-Carlton. For others, camping only takes place in a tent. Those who really enjoy roughing it will think that a tent is for weaklings. They will only camp if they can build their own shelter from what is available in nature.

Obviously, each of these scenarios has its contain set of potential hazards and safety needs. Given that most camping takes place outdoors in less-than-perfect places, some safety precautions need to be taken regardless of the type or location of the camp site.

Always have a first-aid kit available.

While you will need to customize this kit to fit specific needs for your camping slither, things like bandages, gauze, disinfectant, a flashlight, radio, and other similar supplies need to be included. This kit should be clearly marked and kept in a set that can be easily seen and reached. Emergency kits are not much good if you cannot find them in an emergency. Put some extra toilet paper in this kit. Using leaves as a substitute can bring extreme discomfort. Some pain reliever and some type of allergy medication should be a staple in this kit.

Do not camp in truly hazardous areas unless you are well-trained or have a trained guide.

Areas are not called wild because they are safe places. Dangerous animals can be lurking about looking for an easy target. Snakes in some places can raze you with one bite in a very brief time. Insects and spiders can be potential sources of injure if you are not prepared or on the look out for them. Even poisonous plants can bring you more suffering than you need or want although they are rarely fatal unless you are allergic to them. If you are going deep into the woods or wilderness area, take along some type of design and compass.

Test all of your camping gear before heading out to camp.

While this can be considered a safety philosophize, it is also a approved sense issue. It is better to find a problem ahead of time than after you are miles from some position that can offer succor or replacement for faulty gear. This will give you a chance to waterproof you tent or refill propane bottles. Manufacture certain that you have a supply of fresh batteries. Taking along a supply of current food and drinking water should be a allotment of your plan unless it is a survival expedition. Rep up the matches at this point so they make the trip with you.

Do not camp near natural hazardous areas.

Do not camp in areas that are prone to flash floods. If you have children or mentally compromised people along, stop away from places that have steep cliffs or ravines. Be careful when taking children around areas of water whether lakes or streams. If you do not have adequate supervision for these youngsters, find a new place to camp.

Take along protection for your skin.

Three big problems happen to skin when you camp. It can become sunburned. In cold weather, frostbite is the issue. Insect bites can do more than leave a blemish if you are unlucky. Consume a sunblock that has at least a 45 to 50+ SPF rating. Out in the wild is not really the best place to work on a tan. For cool conditions, make sure that you have adequate clothing and cover to protect you from cold wind. Concerning insects, use citronella candles or torches to blanket the campsite against many insects and especially mosquitoes. Using an insect repellent with a deet rating of 100 will guard against almost all mosquitoes, ticks, and body mites.

Here are some other general precautions to assume.

Be careful when having a fire or cooking. Dismal burns can spoil a camping trip. Obey the rules of the area. Many of these are in area to protect you and to protect others from you. Store food away from the sleeping area. If wild animals near looking for it, they may get it but leave you alone. Keep foods cold that require refrigeration. Food poisoning can also take the fun out of camping. Only go camping with people that you really like. The days can get long if your campmates turn into your enemies, too.

Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.

This is very important for safety. By leaving this information with a loved one or friends, they will know when to call out help to find you if something goes wrong. It will be very comforting if you are beyond cell phone range to know that if you cannot get out, someone is going to come looking for you.

Having a sunless tanning peril? Don’t freak out. Whether the palms of your hands have turned a frightening shade of orange or your skin is streaky and blotchy, help is on the method. Take a deep breath and see if you can make one of these easy, at-home tips work for you.

1. Exfoliate. First, moisturize the entire affected area. Then, soak in a warm bath for about 30 minutes. Finally, cleanse the self-tanner off your skin using a loofah and an exfoliating scrub. This procedure should lighten the sunless tanner significantly, if not prefer it altogether. *Exfoliating is also a great fix if sunless tanner has darkened your elbows and knees.

2. For the palms of your hands or bottoms of your feet, use facial hair bleach. Any body hair bleach will do, but bleach meant for the face will surely be the safest. Just apply the bleach onto your palms or soles and let it sit for ten minutes. Then, wash it off, gently scrubbing with a wash cloth. *Hair bleach also does wonders for self tanner under your nails, just apply with a q-tip for 10 minutes, then wash and scrub with a nail bristle.

3. Baking soda is a magic tool in sunless tanner removal. Soak your body in a warm bath to commence up pores. Then, scrub with baking soda and a wash cloth in the shower. If the self tanner has affected your face and neck, scrub the baking soda into damp skin in circular motions, then rinse off.

4. Lemon is another natural self tanner eraser. Best passe on the face and neck, a new lemon wedge rubbed lightly but thoroughly will leave the affected set looking lighter and more radiant.

5. If you’re still looking orange, try rubbing alcohol. Use caution, especially on your face and remember that alcohol may cause excessive dryness of the skin.

6. Another sizable trick is makeup remover. I have found that rubbing the affected area with eye makeup remover specifically, works best.

While these procedures may befriend to remove sunless tanner, it is important to remember that none of these tips tanner from your body completely. The good news is that self tanner only stays in the top layer of your skin, so it should come off naturally within a few days. While this process may be sped up with daily exfoliation, be kind to your skin and do not over-scrub.

I admit I am a self tanner junkie and I have tried it all. I know which ones make you orange and which ones smell too bad to stand. I also know which ones dry the fastest, give you the best results, and have the least smells. Here are my top 5 that are always in my house.

Tan Towel
Maybe the best self tanner out there. It is a towel that you unfold and wipe all over your body. Basically you wash yourself with the provided “towel” whose consistency is like a baby wipe. It dries fast and somehow works with your natural chemicals in your body to beget the perfect, natural, believable tan for you. It has no smell, no streaks, and color develops usually within 3 hours. I gain it is best to apply after a shower before bed so the product can really absorb into your skin. The only problem is that you cannot see where you are applying it but as long as you go over and over the areas that usually isn’t a problem. You cannot apply too much so that is also another added bonus. You can buy them in bulk or individually. They accelerate about 3$ for an individual packet. I get mine at my local Ricky’s in NYC but http://www.tantowel.com/index.asp? PageAction=Custom&ID=94 can show you where you can get them by you.

Sephora Sun Tinted Bronzing Mist Spray Tan
This is a stout inexpensive spray tan that works amazingly well. It can only be found in local Sephora stores and runs for $12.00. It lasts for about 2 months depending how often you need to touch up. It dries snappy, has a pleasant but not strong smell, and leaves a tint on your skin when first applied. It is so easy to apply to the hard to near spots like your back, or back of legs. Also, if you happen to go overboard with coverage it seems to come off easily with a washcloth and soap yet doesn’t recede that quickly without scrubbing.

Sunbrushed Tanning Solution
This one is hard to find but you can order it at http://www.sunbrushed.com/Products.asp. Similar to tan towels but a petite messier. It is a deep chocolate formula that comes with gloves, and a microfiber towel that you dip into the formula and then wash onto your body. I like this because it is easy to gawk where it goes when applied, and application with the towel exfoliates while you apply. It is really easy to apply and it smells nice. It also dries rapidly and the next day after you shower excess comes off and you are left with a great looking tan. It runs about $20.00 for a 2 application kit.

Clinique Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion
This is unique to the market but I am a fan already. It smells honorable going on and dries quickly. It does over time get that self tanner smell but not as strongly as most self tanners out there. It is tinted so you can see where you are applying and it comes in both light and medium to match your skin tone. I like that it immediately shows some color and it is very natural looking. You can find it at most department stores and it runs about $20.00

Fake Bake Instant Air Brush Self Tan Spray
This is very similar to the Sephora Spray tan but bigger and slightly better. It doesn’t clog the pores with “tan” color which can make the skin look like it’s dirty. it dries expeditiously, and it lasts long. It doesn’t smell, a little goes a long way, and it looks very natural. I really like this product for touch ups and when I want a bronze natural looking tan. The only jam is the price, it retails for $30.00.

With all the harmful things that can happen to you from tanning in a booth, or sitting in the sun, it is nice to see that there are some mountainous self tanners out there that work really well. These 5 are the best I have tried so far and work really well to create a natural tan that fades away naturally, and can be kept up easily.

Hawai’i is a popular tourist destination that attracted over 7 million people in 2005. That is about six times the state population. The ideal climate all through the year, magnificent landscape, history, culture, and the peoples’ ALOHA are understandably beautiful internationally. Tourism is a large part of Hawaii’s economy, and hence there are many things to do there. Whether you have one day or ten on the island, this article can assist you. I always get wrathful when someone I know is going to Oahu for vacation or to live. After repeating myself many times, I finally decided to write this article so I can email the link instead. This article comments on scenic views, hikes, Hawaiian healing sites, hula, beaches, a statue/church/palace, surfing, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and others. Note that a car, taxi, or bus is needed for these experiences.

SCENIC VIEWS:

1) Many beautiful scenic views are often accessible for free on the island of Oahu. Assuming you have a rental car or transportation, I strongly recommend going to the lookouts called a) Pali, b) Tantalus, and c) La’ie Point. Of these recommendations, Tantalus and La’ie Point are not always well known by non-locals and some tourist related literature.

A) Pali:

History: This lookout is spectacular and has a view of the Ko’olau Mountains on the Windward side of the island. The historical significance of this lookout has to do with the triumphant battle King Kamehemeha I executed against the Oahu population in an effort to conquer it. Apparently, Oahu’s warriors fought until they fell over the Pali cliffs to their deaths. When you are driving below the Pali cliffs, the Ko’olau mountains are gorgeous, and often with waterfalls. The panoramic thought is definitely worth the accelerate. Pali is pronounced pah-lee.

Directions: You can access it from either side or direction of the Pali Highway, near the Pali tunnel. It is windy and cold on the Pali and jackets will come in handy. It is commence daily (weather permitting) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and has free parking and admission. A lunch wagon and portable bathrooms are there too.

B) Tantalus:

History: This is an over 2000 feet elevation look out with a panoramic view of Manoa valley, Honolulu, and Diamond Head Crater. Manoa is the location of the University of Hawaii’s main campus and prestigious private school called Punahou School. In 1825, Hawaiian Chief Boki brought coffee from Rio De Janeiro to Manoa. Then around 1893 or the time of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy, the Hawaiian Government planted macadamia nuts on Mount Tantalus. Later in 1942 at around 2am, during which time Pearl Harbor was conveniently covered with clouds, Japanese military airplanes dropped 3 bombs on Mount Tantalus. Another less internationally known historical event at this site involves the fact that it is the station I proposed to my beautiful wife during a sunset 12 years ago. She couldn’t help but say “yes” with that ambiance. The sunset viewed from this place is “postcard beautiful“. Tantalus could also be a memorable dwelling for a first kiss (lifetime commitment is optional).

Directions:

This state is accessed taking the Punahou off ramp from the main Highway (H-1, Lunalilo Freeway heading toward Diamond Head). Next you take the Punahou off ramp and turn left on Punahou Street heading toward the mountains. You then take a left on Nehoa Street and then a right on Makiki Drive. You then merge left on Round Top Drive for about 6 minutes to Tantalus lookout. If you arrive from Waikiki, you can head toward downtown Honolulu on Ala Wai Boulevard and turn right on McCully then turn left on Wilder, then right turn on Makiki Drive. Continue toward mountain on Makiki Drive and after passing the cross street Nehoa street on Makiki Drive you then merge left on Round Top Drive to the look out. There is also a nice park and picnic area a little further up the road.

C) La’ie Point:

History: Historically, La’ie is the origin and inspiration of the “Hukilau Song” (by Arthur Godfrey) and the Shaka sign (local greeting hand signing). In the early 1900’s, Hamana Kalili was a fisherman and respected Hawaiian elder who lost his three middle fingers and therefore only had his thumb and pinky fingers. Still, there is another story about the origin of the Shaka sign. If one closes there hand, and only extends to thumb and pinky finger, you have the Shaka note. “Shaka” means “right on” and “howzit” (how is it going). This residence has a spectacular sea arch and a seabird island. La’ie is pronounced lah-ee-ay.

Directions: This site is located on Anemoku Road on the beautiful windward coast. Take Anemoku Road off of Kamehameha Highway (at a traffic light) heading north or south on the windward side to end of Naupaka Street . It is on the other side of the Laie Village Shopping Center and in the vicinity of the Polynesian Cultural Center.

2) HIKES:

Reasonably easy and short hikes on Oahu are Manoa Falls, Diamond Head, and Aiea Loop trail.

Manoa Falls:

History: Manoa valley used to be remarkable for taro and u’ala (sweet potato) fields, a dairy farm, and a trolley. Now it is mostly a residential area with cottage type homes near the University of Hawai’i. Manoa falls tends to be a little muddy due to frequent rain. When I was at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I got into the habit of always having an umbrella in my backpack. You never know with those tropical rains. The falls are about 15 minutes into the hike.

Directions: If coming from Waikiki, you should purchase McCully Street out of Waikiki toward the mountains. You can then turn apt onto Kapiolani Boulevard and then left onto University and drive adjacent to the University of Hawaii campus. Next you turn right onto Manoa Road. This will dead end at the trail head.

Diamond Head Location Monument:

History: Diamond Head is an extinct crater formed by a series of explosive eruptions about 100,000 years ago and is possibly the most famous landmark on Oahu. It has a panoramic wonderful view. The original name was Leahi (tuna brow), but foreign sailors in 19th century saw intellectual crystals from lava stone and erroneously thought it had diamonds. It was worn as a military fort or bunker with canons around 1900. On the hike you go through it and the tunnel is dark. Flashlights and water are recommended for the Diamond Head hike. It is about one hour up to the top and 40 minutes down depending on your conditioning level.

Directions: In order to get there from Waikiki, you take Kalakaua Avenuve toward Kapiolani Park. Next you merge left onto Monsarrat Avenue and then Monsarrat Avenue turns into Diamond Head Road. Next you drive up Diamond Head Road until you reach the sign that reads Diamond Head Crater (which is between Makapuu Ave & 18th Ave.). There is a bathroom at parking area but not at top of hike. Admission is free (last time I was there) and it is open daily 6am to 6pm.

Aiea Loop Trail And Keaiwa Heiau (temple):

History: The Aiea Loop trail is the sight of Keaiwa heiau which was said to be a medical school or healing and training temple. It is a sacred place and has some displays. The picnic residence is in the same field. This hike is gargantuan and often shaded by trees.

Directions: Take H1 highway west bound to Highway 78. Then you can get off Highway 78 at the “Aiea” turnoff onto Moanalua Road. Then you can turn right onto Aiea Heights Drive and go to the top of mountain and you will look the scoot entrance. In front of the trail are covered picnic tables and bathrooms.

3) HAWAIIAN HEALING AND SPIRITUAL SITES:

Wizard Stones

History: Sometime before 1400, Ancient Hawaiians hauled these four large stones two miles to the beach. They were thought to be with the mana (spiritual mighty force) of four great Tahitian kahuna priests who were healers. Please see the other article I wrote on Hawaiian Healing published by ASSOCIATEDCONTENT.

Directions: It is located at Waikiki Beach on Kalakaua Avenue. It is next to the Waikiki Police Department which is opposite to the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Kukaniloko Birthstones Space Monument

History: Kukaniloko is a collection of approximately 180 sacred stones. It is an aged Hawaiian royalty site where they came for the birth of their children. The spiritual power of mana is thought to be plentiful there. The stones are said to be a considerable place, and some even have petroglyphs. Kukaniloko Birthstones are one of the most significant cultural sites on O’ahu.

Directions:
It is at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 99) and Whitmore Avenue on the north side of Wahiawa (between Wahiawa and Haleiwa). It is close to the Dole Plantation also.

Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau

History: Oahu’s largest heiau (ancient residence of worship) is a national historic landmark with an extraordinary north shore beach view. Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau is the largest and oldest heiau (area of worship) on O’ahu. It is a sacred temple site with walls that consists of three stone structures. This temple is located on the 250-foot cliffs above Waimea Bay. The ancient temple may have served as a heiau of human sacrifice. It is said to be the sacrifice site of Captain George Vancouver’s party in 1793.

Directions: This is on the North Shore and off of Pupukea Homestead Road (Highway 835) which is accessed off of Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83). The Pupukea road is adjacent to a small shopping complex that has Starbucks and a Safeway grocery store. The temple is on the cliff above the shopping complex.

4) HULA:

History: Hula is a do of sacred dancing by Hawaiians that involves spirituality, poetry, hidden meanings or kaona, and stories. There are traditional forms and more contemporary forms. The old style is called kahiko. A kahuna or extensively trained specialist could be a specialist in the hula, medicine, canoe building, genealogy, etc. There are some hotels that have free hula performances and ukulele lessons. You should check with the hotel you are staying with for information. Did you know that you can see free daily hula shows on the beach at Waikiki?

Directions: The free hula show is every evening at Waikiki beach across from Hyatt Regency, in vicinity of the Duke Kahanamoku Statue and the Wizard/Healing stones. It is a free performance by varying artists of hula every evening. Summer performances start at 6:30pm but it starts earlier during winter months.

The formerly famous free Kodak Hula Explain closed some years ago but is tranquil erroneously listed on some websites.

5) BEACHES AND SNORKELING:

My celebrated northern beaches on Oahu are Sunset beach, Haleiwa beach, Pipeline beach, and Sharks Cove.

History: Historically, the north shore beach was the beach frequented by the frail Hawaiian monarchy for their vacations. More recently, Haleiwa beach was where Baywatch filmed their shows. Currently, “Lost” films in the area, especially at Ka’ena Point. Actually all the beaches on Oahu are great and you could drive around the island to glance all of them in 1.5 hours (without stopping). Other remarkable beachs are Diamond Head, Makapu’u, Sandy Beach, Waimanalo (great boogie boarding with shore breaks and no coral), Bellows (suitable next to Waimanalo), Kailua, Makaha, Waialua, and Kahuku Beach.

Waikiki beach is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. It is even a nice place to boogie board on runt waves close to the shore. The long board surfing is a bit of a paddle out from shore and classes and rentals are available. You have to be able to say you went to Waikiki or friends and relatives will be disappointed.

The best snorkeling places to me are at Sharks Cove on the North Shore (summer time only, large waves exist during the winter) and Hanauma Bay. The last time I was at Shark’s Cove I saw a large turtle (Honu) that made a lasting impression. Remember not to touch the turtles or scare them. They will not be near the shore in the future if they are not respected or panicked. Hanauma Bay has a very small fee but has spectacular snorkeling and diving. You need to regain an early start for Hanauma Bay. The last time I went at 10am, I could not get in since it was full (it was a weekday!).

Directions: Most free maps at hotels will show you where most of the beaches are located.

You can rent snorkels at some beaches but it will be cheaper and healthier to bring your own from home or buy an affordable set on trip.

6) STATUES/CHURCH/PALACE:

Kamehemeha Statue

Kamehameha I was the first king to unite all of the Hawaiian Islands around 1810. Supposedly he wanted to unite the islands in order to make a stronger cohesive Hawaiian nation to deal with foreign visitors easier. The missionaries arrived in 1820. A famous prestigious private school is called the Kamehameha Schools. A Kamehameha student’s genealogy must show proof of Hawaiian ancestry in order to go to the school. The author of this article attended the Kamehemeha Schools. Their admissions policy is currently being challenged in court. Princess Pauahi willed the school to “Hawaii’s children”.

Directions: The King Kamehameha statue is on South King Street (a one way street, and the cross street is Punchbowl Street). It is in front of the Judiciary Building.

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue

It is at Waikiki beach. Kahanamoku was a pure Hawaiian famous for getting multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Olympics (1912-22) and being an internationally known surfer (and the “Hawaiian ambassador of aloha”).

Directions: Duke is found in Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue across from the Hyatt Regency hotel. He is also near the Wizard stones and a free daily evening hula show.

Kawaiaha’o Church

History: The Kawaiaha’o Church is historically known for being the first Christian church in Hawaii, and was built around 1840. It is made of 14,000-pound slabs of coral that weighed 1000 pounds each. You can see it for free, but the tour has a fee. Masses in Hawaiian are also available there.

Directions: Kawaiaha’o Church is located in Honolulu at 957 Punchbowl Street. It is arrive the Missionary Museum and the Medical Library. If coming from Waikiki, occupy Kalakaua Avenue toward the mountains. Then turn left onto South Beretania Street (a one way street) and then turn left onto Punchbowl Street and it is on the left. There is metered and free parking available on the streets nearby.

‘Iolani Palace State Monument

History: Officially dedicated in 1882, the Iolani Palace was a location for the monarchs and their courts on special occasions. The ‘Iolani Palace was also the former space of King Kalakaua, Queen Kapiolani, and Queen Liliokalani. It is a dazzling palace that can be viewed on the external premises for free. The Royal Hawaiian Band plays for free every Friday from 1200 to 100pm on the palace grounds. They play Queen Liliokalani’s eminent song Aloha Oe. Queen Liliokalani was the reigning monarchy during the overthrow of 1893 by American business men. She avoided bloodshed during the overthrow and trusted the America government, thinking they would eventually give Hawaii back to her since that was the graceful thing to do. President Clinton signed a document of apology in 1993 (exactly one hundred years later).

Directions: Tours of ‘Iolani Palace are popular and cost money. You can view the palace from outside without a fee. I understand that you need to make reservations (call 808-522-0832 Wednesday through Saturday) more than two weeks in advance to guarantee getting in on a tour (hours are 9 am to 2:15pm). It is on corner of South King Street & Richards Street in downtown Honolulu.

7) SURFING:

History: Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to the world and was also an Olympic champion. It was also the sport of Hawaiian royalty on the North Shore and elsewhere. Surfing is a popular local sport and lessons are easy to find.

During the winter months, the large surf (over 20 feet sometimes) is on the North Shore and many famous competitions are there. Everyone has heard of Pipeline. It is a blast to watch people surfing these huge waves. During the summer, the northern shore has flat to small waves, and Sharks Cove has expansive snorkeling during that time. During the summer months, the more southern shores are larger (eg. Waikiki beach and Diamond Head beach). One great thing about Oahu is that if one side of the island is overcast, the other side probably has enough sun to appreciate the beach or a picnic. Don’t go in the water when the waves are big! I’ve been held under the water approach coral reefs and luckily escaped with my life.

The North Shore Surf and Cultural Museum is in the North Shore Marketplace (66-250 Kamehameha Hwy.). It has great historical surf boards, articles, and a surfing video room. It is open from Tues-Sun and noon-5pm. The admission is free but donations are common.

 WAIKIKI

History: Waikiki beach is a beautiful beach that has a lot of history and all nationalities are represented in bikinis there. It is a beach that has very microscopic coral reefs near the shore. Dinner on the beach and an evening stroll compliment a great day. Furthermore, the Waikiki sunset is gorgeous. The vicinity of Waikiki includes other landmarks like Kapiolani Park and Bandstand (which has free performances and festivals on many weekends), the Waikiki Aquarium, the Honolulu Zoo, shops, restaurants, free weekend movies on the beach, and Wyland gallery. The International Market Place in Waikiki is a bound unto itself.
Waikiki beach is a classic Hawaiian tourist experience.

Directions: Waikiki is about 10 minutes south from the Honolulu airport, and off the main (H-1) highway. Next you just follow the signs to Waikiki.

9) PEARL HARBOR AND ARIZONA MEMORIAL (free boat ride)

History: The United States officially entered World War Two after that day of infamy when Pearl Harbor was bombed. It is well worth your time to experience, assume on, and respect. It starts with a poignant film about the Pearl Harbor event that lasts at least 15 minutes. People are then brought out to a ferryboat and shuttled to the USS Arizona Memorial (near sunken ship). The experience is sobering and gives you a unique perspective.

Directions: You should drive west on H-1 highway past the airport and then take the USS Arizona Memorial exit and follow the green/white signs. The site is commence daily from 7:30am-5pm (programs run 8am-3pm). Wheelchairs are accommodated very well and children under 12 should be with an adult. Remember that shirts and shoes are required (shorts are fine but no swimsuits or slippers/flip-flops or slippers allowed). The Arizona Memorial Shuttle Bus picks up people at some Waikiki hotels 6:50am-1pm (telephone 808/839-0911), about $6 round-trip). Pearl Harbor is a National site that is free, no reservations are involved and parking is free.

10) OTHER GREAT OPTIONS WITH A FEE:

Everyone should consider the Bishop Museum (artifacts, books, music, hula, children activities too), Childrens’ Discovery Center in Kaka’ako, Hanauma Bay (tall beach and snorkeling with a ton of fish, 5 dollar fee), Germaine’s Luau, Polynesian Cultural Center, Honolulu Botanical Gardens, Sea Life Park, Missionary Museum,
Byodo-In Temple (behind Valley of the Temples Cemetery in Kaneohe and has a huge gong bell, koi pond, and Buddhist shrine), Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu Zoo, Dillingham Airfield for skydiving and glider rides, and the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.

If you go island hopping and visit the Big Island, you must experience ATV Outfitters Hawaii. ATV Outfitters Hawaii will be the highlight for your trip! It has a cultural and historical coastal tour on ATVs. The friendly and local Hawaiian Wong family owns and operates it. It is located in Kohala where King Kamehameha I used to live.

Some Random Travel Tips:

1.Do not spend too powerful time in sun, especially without protection. Sun tan lotion should be SPF 30 or above and needs to be applied hourly while in sun. Getting a first degree burn will minimize your fun.
2.Always lock your doors and valuables.
3.Do not touch or depart things at healing or sacred temple sites.
4.Don’t forget museum and botanical garden memberships from home as you may be able to use them in Hawaii.
5.Recheck above information for changes in time and prices.
6.Avoid big waves and watch for under currents and rip tides. You can also talk to the life guard about water conditions.
7.Do not turn your back on waves when in water.
8.Reflect bringing your snorkel and fins from home on the trip.
9.Recommended books about Hawaii:

Hawaii: An Informal History by Judd
Hawaii: A History by Kuykendall
A Call For Hawaiian Sovereignty by Dudley and Agard
Man, Gods, And Nature by Dudley is a big and easy to read summary of authentic Hawaiian spirituality and worldview beliefs.
Ancient Hawaiian Civilization by Grant, Handy, Buck, John H.
